I had just started dating this guy over the holidays but recently told him I didn't want to be exclusive (which makes the situation more complicated because the relationship may not have a future, except for friendship).

Just this week, his Dad took a turn for the worse after surgery. I don't know how to be there for him, except to let him know I am praying and he and his family are in my thoughts (which is the truth). Is there anything else I can do or say?

Well it makes it hard because you just told him you don't want to be exclusive. But if you are his friend just go by the hospital. Stay for awhile. Tell him your sorry and if he needs a shoulder you'll be there. You'll know what to do it will come natural. He needs a friend now. Listen to him that is what he needs most. Just be yourself and keep praying. You will know what direction to take.

Well what do you say in a situation like that? I just had a couple friends die a week ago and there is nothing anyone can say to make you feel better, what they need most is to know that you are there for them no matter what. You saying something doesn't make it better, but you being there does. A lot of my friends bailed on me and it's tough being alone when someone dies or is close to it. What he needs most is you to be there.

Well you can start by asking if he or his family needs anything. That is something that any "friend" would do. Going to the hospital to visit him and his family and show your support would probably be great too.

I don't think there is really anything you can do to ease pain like that. THe only thing to do is to remind him that you are there for him if he needs to talk. Also, as you said, assure him you are praying.

that is just horribe. what you should do is to just try to be there for them and help them through this. trust me, it really will make a difference even the little things.

maybe just spend time with him,
as a friend.
be there for him, talk to him,
and hopefully things will work out for the both of you.
