The ideas I have are more of a health related nature...
#1
He could do a project about how drinking too much soda affects your bones...
Sodas contain lots of phosphorous (which leaches the calcuim out of your bones.)
Take 2 chicken bones place one in a jar of water (control) and the other in a jar of pop (I think I've seen Coke used.) Leave them for the same amount of time, then test the strength of the two.
Project #2
Requires coffee filters, water, and sugar, and a stop watch.
Measure the same amount of water (2 cups) into 5 jars. Place varying amounts of sugar into each jar.... one plain for the control, then, 1/4 c., 1/2 c., 3/4 c., and 1 c. (Make sure the sugar is completely dissolved.)
Starting with the control, pour the water through the coffee filter and time it with the stop watch. Record the time. Repeat with the other sugar solutions. (Make sure you use a clean coffee filter each time.)
It is supposed to simulate how much harder your body has to work to process all the sugar out of soft drinks. You'll notice the more sugar the water has dissolved... the longer it takes to go through the coffee filter.
Hope that helps!!

There is nothing new that you could do with a pennyless 12 year old and it's pointless to reinvent the wheel. Anything new would take a lot of money and technology. The school is flushing your time down the toilet. Instead, buy him a book on real estate or the stock market so he can make a living. To pass the stupid course, go to a hobby store and buy a cheap, prepackaged science kit.

one very interesting experiment i found out at an open house is pretty easy.
materials: candle, match
procedure: light the candle, and let it stay light for a little while. then blow it out. put a lighted match in the smoke of the candle. the gas in the smoke if flammable, carrying the fire down to candle, thus lighting it.
