It depends entirely on what shape your foot is in, how much weigh, and that sort of thing. What is comfortable for one person might totally suck for another. For instance, i wear New Balance 587's. They're awesome. For me. But my feet are extremely flat, I'm a large guy, and a good deal of the bone of my left leg/hip is held together with titanium pins, thanks to an IED just south of Fallujah. So my shoes my be incredibly uncomfortable for you. What I recommend, is to go to a specialized shoe store, where the staff know what they're doing. Get them to measure your feet, analyze the shape of your foot, what kind of pronation or supination (how your foot rolls when you run or walk) and try on a bunch. Also, good running shoes aren't cheap. Zappos.com is an excellent website for shoes, but I don't know if they ship to the UK or not.

there is a thing in all shoes called a "last" it is the distance from your heel to your big toe knuckle. Every shoe company's last is different so no one can pick your shoes for you! You can go to the biggest sport shoes retailer in your city and try them all on (and here is where you take your thickest soc to do this) trust me thin soc will leave your feet frowning. try them all on and when you find the best pair (for the money) you go back to your computer and find them using make and model number and use the words bargain, closeout or sale in your world wide search. Nike and Puma are both extremely comfortable. They are also both pretty affordable.
