Run msconfig and uncheck unnecessary things that are running at startup. To get to msconfig just click Start/Run/ then type msconfig. I posted about it on my Blog. You can read my post here for more information. http://kansasdad.blogspot.com/2006/03/how-to-use-msconfig.html
The only startup items you absolutely need are:
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
Your antivirus program, you won't have a hard time figuring out which one is your antivirus program. It should be pretty obvious.
Since you need these startup items to be running all the time in order for your computer to work properly, make sure there is always a check mark next to all of these startup items.
If you don't see one or two these items in your list of startup items, that's ok. For example, some people may not have a LoadPowerProfile while others may have two. The big thing to remember is that you don't want to uncheck any of these files if you have them.

As cheap as ram is, why in the world would you compromise the integrity of an already weakened operating system? Obviously you are not ready to succumb to the power and memory drain that will be Microsoft's newest launch: Vista.
Save yourself before it is to late! Get Linux!

I, myself, wouldn't touch any of those running processes. Go into your documents and see what you can clean out there. Run "Disk Cleanup," by going to Start, Accessaries, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. Go into your internet explorer and clean out your temperary files folder..Good luck.
