Ive tried one version of bearshare and there isnt much choice, is there a better version?
Ive also tried Kazaa in the past which ruined my computer and I lost all my digital photos and downloaded music, my whole desktop was wiped!
It must be free and it must be safe...can anyone help?

you can't, nothing is both safe and free, it's stealing
that being said, limewire works for me, but you have to know what a virus looks like, here are some features
- the name is vague ie: 01 track 1, RARE RECORDING
- they have an unusually small file size (<1000 kb)
- the name has exactly what you typed, in that order, including spelling mistakes
- WMA files tend to be viruses, only download MP3's
- when you hold you cursor over the file for more info it says, "comments: not related: " and then exactly what you typed in
If you avoid these things and other unusual looking files you should stay virus/spyware free, but be sure to have a virus scan software
