I'm doing an art project. The customer wants earth tones, but not "flat" colors like brown. I get the feeling a dark green wouldn't go over well either since its also a dull color. What Earth tones are there to use that arent "flat"?

Earth tones look flat because they're mostly opaque. Try one of the transparent colours like Transparent Red Oxide, Transparent Orange Oxide, Quinachridone Burnt Orange, Nickel Azo Yellow, Green-Gold, Azo Green, or Indian Yellow. Since they're transparent they give a lot of depth, and they dry with a high gloss.

Use top-quality paint - the colours I named are available in Golden (Acrylic) or M. Graham (Acrylic or Oil), and probably others as well.

Look around, all colors are earth tones...from grass green to sky blue to the bright red setting sun. How about the beautiful orange and lavender hues in the sky just before sunset? Paprika is an interesting color. Sunflower yellow is another. I have personally always been partial to teal and aqua, but I'm a cool tone. If you want to be sure to choose the right tone, ask them what they prefer. Another indicator is the color they wear often or the color scheme in the home. Hope that gives you a few to think about. Have a great day!

Burnt umber, raisin/eggplant, russet, moss... try using two contrasting colors to keep the project from appearing dull. What about a combination of some rich deep purple, like eggplant with a gold-based color, like goldenrod? Good luck.

It's hard to say what "flat" means, but for paint, I like Pratt & Lambert "Maple Sugar".
