I am going to go against the grain here and say answer a. While organized crime was a short term effect of prohibition most gangsters like Al Capone were either arrested or killed before Prohibition ended. Most cartels and gangs today would not fall under the heading of organized crime because they often only control small sections of towns. Also prohibition was repealled long before any of these cartels were started. However prohibition did cause the effect of the consumer economy as even the individual seller could get wealthy not just the major crime syndicates.

It's not "A" because a consumer economy existed before, during, and certainly after the Prohibition. Organized crime was probably the biggest factor in distributing illegal booze during the time period and shored up a lot of the mafia's future influence and connections. Considering how much money the Kennedy family just from shipping scotch from Great Britain to the US (JFK's father really ran some serious smuggling operations during his tenure as ambassador to England), it was still considered very small compared to what the OC's in Chicago, New York, and Boston were bringing in.

A! Organized crime was always big. "Gangs of New York" took place years before prohibition. Prohibition is linked to organized crime because of their taking over the bootlegging, but they were there long before.

b agree as many illegal funds were started because of alcohol and this gave rise to organized crime. the gangs vied with each other for control of the speakeasies and had no problem in forcing the owners and patrons to purchase from the strongest gang.
