It's not normally random from what I've seen, there's usually a reason. Like the kid knows more than they do, or the student's achieved more than the teacher has so they're jealous of him, or the teacher thinks the student is a bully or something and dislikes him. If it's random, I'd say the teacher's weird! Either way there's no reason for teachers to pick on students!

I think it's wrong for a teacher to just randomly pick on a student unless they put in some effort in helping the student get the correct answer. It's overwhelming for the student at times because they might not understand and out of nowhere, they get called on and everyone is staring at them. It sucks if the student is especially shy. But yeah, I once had a teacher that picks on everyone equally through a notecard and he would ask questions and guide them through it. It was thoughtful, fun, and other students could help out, too! He was a great teacher! Why'd you ask though?

I think that teacher is both stupid and immature. If speaking to a counselor or principal didn't work, I would suggest learning something about the teacher and and using that knowledge to form a snappy retort. Be patient, make sure that you have figured out a couple of comebacks before you go to war. Be careful not to curse or say anything that the teacher can legitimately detain or suspend you for-eg don't mention his/her social security number, address, or threaten them. If you can find out their grades in college or other funny info that is good, but not necessary. You can just mock the fact that they are picking on a student, and question their maturity. Practice what you are going to say and try to think of what the teachers responses might be so that you can really shut them down.

The teacher has an overbearing life at home and he picks on students so he can feel good about himself. If they can just deal with it because chances are the school will not do anything about the teacher and then the teacher will just make the student's life more miserable. Hopefully, it will only be until this year gets out, we have all had jerk teachers like that, power trip jerks.

It all depends. When you say picking on them, in what way do you mean this? Nothing is wrong with teachers that want to poke a little fun at students, it's nothing out of the norm in college or high school, it's part of life, and you should be able to take a joke because chances are what you're told by a teacher is nothing compared to what your "friends" tell you on a regular basis.
What you have to be careful with is if the student is repeatedly getting in trouble or something like that. My uncle divorced a woman who was less than right in his head, I guess you could say and it just so happened that her father, who was old and miserable and close to retiring ended up teaching me math of all things, a subject I never passed. He picked on me, a lot, and well, you can guess why, I was the closest thing he could get in terms of retaliation if you want to call it that, and I was in trouble a lot, unjustly, I might add, and it was much easier for him because I was no good at mathematics to begin with.
If you are the student, assess the situation, see if this is something really out of place or what. Teachers pick on students whom they see potential in but are not using their full potential. Hope this helps.

Well, I've been a student for like 10 years. PLenty of teachers have picked on me. I think what you really should be looking at is how they "Pick" on this student. Most teachers pick on students to get the student more involved with what ever activity they are doing. Teachers almost never randomly pick a student to pick on. Most students they pick on either have behavor issues or they are not paying attiation. The only reason most teachers would pick on a student is to help that student...

As an adult, I have no respect for any teacher that picks on any students. While teachers are only human and they may not like everyone, they have to control their behavior and treat every student the same.
If you are a student experiencing this, talk to your parent(s) and/or guidance counselor. My son was experiencing this with a teacher. He told me and I went to the principal of the school. I eventually had him transferred to a class with a different teacher. Nobody should be subjected to that.

If the teacher is doing it because he/she is not paying attention then maybe they half deserve it, but even then it shouldn't be done. If it's you talk to your counsler that's what I did teachers pick on my all the time because my hand writing is neat and small, and also because I dont talk. Teachers who do that are immature, but also some teachers have favorites like most teens do they either like or don't like that person. Even though teachers shouldn't have favorites most do.

I'm a teacher and it's never random. Besides, it's not picking. You have to keep your classroom environment proper to learning, so if a student disturbs too much, then you have to deal with it. The others deserve that much.

This is one situation where I really feel super strongly! The students should defend the student being picked on and go together to the principal and complain. It's abuse, and it's wrong!
