I believe doing anything alone can build your confidence and make you stronger in the end. You learn a lot about who you are, and what you can do if you *had* to, with no other support/judgement from others who may be there with you. You only have you to rely on, so you end up doing what's needed faster.

Yes. I am now 56 (male) and have been travelling in various ways since I was 17. The first time I went with a girl I knew and we hitched through France and Spain and then went to Morocco until our money had almost run out and then we took the cheapest train back to UK. Since then I have travelled alone, all over the place. I have got myself into some really difficult situations but have so far been able to resolve them. I travel at my own speed, on my own budget, stop when i want to stop ... Yes I do think that solitary travelling is better but of course you always meet people along the way. However, I never get attached. Next month I am off to USA again to use the Greyhound buses to cross the whole country and later on this year I hope to go back to France and use the cheap trains that run to the villages. I am (now) a strong and independent person. I have met countless people, countless. It isn't always 'great fun'. I have been to Brazil, Cuba, Ethiopia, India, the Congo ... trying to keep your self-possession in the face of such suffering and poverty is very hard but you have to do it so that you can come back to a rich country and publish what you have experienced. To finance my journeys I have taken any and every job and lived very simply or just lived on the street. I used to think that I wanted to be a 'world citizen' and know everything and learn everything, but i know now that I will need several lifetimes to achieve that. Good fortune. Do it.

Absolutely, it does and you not only grow as a person but you get to meet all the native people of the country and lots of other travellers as well, because as you know when you travel abroad most foreigners tend to stick together. If you have difficulties then you find out just how resourceful you can be, you would do things you never thought possible. Your outlook on life not only improves it grows.

Nice question. I've done this most of my life and never really thought about it.There are times you find yourself in situations/places and the only person you can rely on is yourself. You learn to be prepared for anything and shocked by nothing. You see the beauty of the world but you always a target.I would recommend to almost anyone to try it . So I guess the answer is yes it does improve strength/outlook . I look at it character building.

Yes Yes! Having travelled to South Africa a few years ago, I came back with the strengthened my confidence to share my sexuality with my family. It was the absolute wonder of Cape town that did it for me. I then went onto visit India well... My spiritual identity came to life. The memories are lasting. Go for it....As a black person India took me out of my comfort zone, food people culture. Travell Travell

Dont pay to travel. Get a job where you travel to different locations. That way you see the real country and the real people......warts and all.
My job has me traveling to different locations on my own, I find the second time i turn up somewhere its as if i see it through different eyes.....like all the locals dont want to kill you!

I definetly agree with this. It gives you more independence and a stronger guide through life and what you want out of it. It also gives you more expirience and too meet differeant kinds of people along the way.

Absolutely. Mark Twain said "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts." and it's absolutely true.
You will never have an understanding of other people and other countries unless you experience them first hand and get to know them well.

i think it makes you stronger as a person, you are able to come back to your normal life and put what you have learned to a great advantage. being by yourself and relying on no-one makes you stronger.
