If you were traveling to the San Francisco Bay area I would try to steer you away from Fisherman's Wharf and to the places we like to go with our young kids. When I travel I like being just outside the city center and live among the locals. Ideally I would rent a home and use that as our base for excursions. Interested in hearing your thoughts.

If you came to Croatia, I would recommend you to stay in Gorski Kotar. A huge, natural, mostly untouched alpine forrest. 1 hour south from the capital Zagreb, and 30mins north from the sea port of Rijeka.
You can ski and tobbogan in Gorski Kotar in winter or just rent a little cottage, build a fire and relax in total peace.
In summer its beautiful to go for bush walks, or fishing and swimming.
