I know they say that it is 9 months, but isn't it typically longer than 9 months?

An average human pregnancy lasts for about 280 days or 40 weeks from the date of the last menstrual period (LMP). Traditionally, it has been calculated as 10 lunar months, or in terms of the modern calendar - 9 months and 7 days. Fertilisation however, occurs (considering an average menstrual cycle of 28 days) 14 days after the last periods. Thus, the actual duration of a human pregnancy (gestation period) is 280 - 14 = 266 days.

It's 40 days, which if you divided that out by a typical 4 weeks in a month would actually equal ten months. The first 4 weeks you don't even know you are pregnant. That is when you have your period then ovulate, the egg is fertilized, etc... You won't get a positive pregnancy test until you are already 4 weeks pregnant (they count from the first day of your last period).

it's 40 weeks, 280 days... (9 full months ie have the baby at the beginning of the 10th month)
However the baby can come anywhere between 38-42 weeks.

It's actually 10 months - which is why it is typically calculated by weeks - 40 weeks in a full term pregnancy.
