And if they do, where does the blood go...do they menstruate?

Yes. But there are two ways by which that happens. The first is the uterine cycle, which is exhibited only by primates. This involves menstruation, where the endometrial lining (outermost lining of the uterus) is shed off when fertilization of the ovum does not take place. Bleeding occurs as a result. The lining is rebuilt every uterine cycle.

The second is the oestrous cycle, which is exhibited by all other mammals. When fertilization does not take place, the endometrial lining is simply reabsorbed by the uterus. Bleeding may occur, but it is not that extensive. Unlike the uterine cycle, the oestrous cycle is not continuous. There are only certain seasons of the year when the mammal becomes "heated" and becomes sexually active. At these seasons, the endometrial lining is also rebuilt in preparation for pregnancy.

All female mammals do enrich the uterine lining, or endometrium, with each ovulatory cycle. However, only humans and great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans) experience menstruation, or a shedding of the endometrium, resulting in vaginal bleeding. Other mammalian females experience oestrus, a process in which the endometrium is simply reabsorbed. Sometimes a female mammal experiencing oestrus will have a bloody vaginal discharge, but it is not menstruation.

All female mammals (excluding the duck-billed platypus) ovulate and therefore increase the lining of the womb during ovulation.
