City of God is one of my favorites.
it is a story about a young boy growing up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. it is very bloody however, so if you are not into this maybe a better choice would be Howl's Moving Castle.
i was skeptical at first, anime is not my style, but a very imaginative and entertaining story.
