I was always told that in British law you can change your name to anything you like as many times as you like as long as you don't use the change to defraud anybody. All you need to do is use the name on all your documents for 5 years and the name is officially yours. I believe that still stands. BUT you do need to do it by deed poll if you want your taxes, insurence, banks etc to accept it. Deed polls arent expensive and are a lot quicker, they require you to publish your change of name in the local news papers. Although I have a friend who was going through gender reassignment and all he did was turn up in a dress to his social sercurity office and told them his name was now Michelle and they changed it without question.

Ask the local registry office, they might be able to help, but i think you'd need to see your solicitor too.
