could be any of the following;
o2 sensor tps sensor map sensor egr valve or position sensor,crank sensor, cam sensor and on and on the list goes. You need to have the car scanned to pin point whats turning the light on.Then do not just replace what ever the scanner says it is.Why have that part failed ??It could be that part but it could also be the wiring to or from that part.Do just throw parts at it find out what really wrong and fix the one problem.

Sometimes all it takes is to not put your gas cap on all the way. Turn it until it clicks 6 or 7 times to make sure you get a good seal. You're probably going to have to take it to a repair shop and have it put on a diagnostic scope. This will either tell you what is wrong or just reset the sensor so the light will go off.

More info Mia, If your car has over 100,000 miles on it but runs fine then it needs its code cleared. Take it to a Auto Zone and ask them to hook a code scanner up to your OBDII (they'll know what your saying) and it will print out a code for the reason the check engine light being on. If that codes had 4 digits in it ( 1409 for example) them you'll have to take it into a dealer to be cleared. Its nothing you can fix, the computer needs to be re calibrated.

Good Luck...

On most newer vehicles, the 'check' light refers to anti-pollution circuits. One easy thing to check is your gas tank cap... is it tight? If you have been driving a while and go to fill up, does loosening the cap cause a hiss as air rushes in? It should!
I am told this will not affect the operation of the vehicle in short term operation, but you should have your garage look into it the next time you go in for regular service.....

I think this has to do with the air polution device. When it is working correctly the light will go out, then come back on if it malfunctions. So it might stay on for different amounts of time, or stay off the same way.

Make sure the air breather (filter) is clean, and the gas cap is seating properly. Other wise take it to an Auto Zone parts store and get it tested for free and they'll tell you what you'll need to fix it.

It's always good to have things checked out by a mechanic, but it could be nothing more than a faulty sensor which cost a lot to replace.

if it is your check engine light, most likely has to do with your oxygen sensor. have your catalitic converter checked.
