Here is a website where some tried it and one said it worked and some said they had severe loose stools from it. http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/castorOil.html I copied and pasted some of what some of them said. You can go and read the rest if you wish: Personally, I would just let nature take its course. I wouldn't want to have severe cramping and accidentally have the baby in the toilet!
Please note!
There is a vegetable oil called CASTOR Oil, made from castor beans, which is sometimes used to get labor going or for other medicinal purposes. There is a petroleum product, i.e. motor oil, called Castrol Oil, which could be toxic. Please do not confuse them!
Please also note - some of the recommendations here are for 4 oz. of castor oil. This is 2 or 4 times the general recommended dose. Some moms have tried it and had a riproaring really fast labor with lots and lots of diarrhea. It probably makes more sense to figure out your body's ideal tolerance for castor oil by starting with a smaller amount, maybe one tablespoon, and working up to more each day. Some women have found castor oil so untasty that they couldn't stomach it a second time, so there's a gamble here either way. Good luck!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're thinking about castor oil but not quite at that stage yet, you could try a general laxative agent. Some options:
Try eating a lot of licorice, the real licorice candy, the black kind, especially Panda brand, which is definitely real licorice, or Bassett's Allsorts, which might be tastier. Licorice contains the chemical, glycyrrhizin, which stimulates the production of prostaglandins. In addition, eating lots of licorice might cause a mild diarrhea, and intestinal contractions can cause sympathetic uterine contractions. Please let me know how this works for you.
One mom said that Correctol (Bisacodyl Stimulant Laxative) worked great for her; she took the maximum daily dose all at once. Please e-mail me to let me know how this works for you.
I tried this and it didn't work i had horrible diarrhea and vomiting, no progression for labor!
I used it for my first child and with about 2 hours of bathroom time I started with the contractions. I had a long labor but within 6 hours of taking it i was having contractions 2-3 minutes apart. I am pregnant now and tried it again but all it did was make me have a lot of gas nothing else. I was hoping it was going to work being it did so well the first time. I guess it just depends on your body at the time but I would recomand it to someone to try if they are 37 weeks or more. I tell everyone good luck, it is a good thing sometimes and a disapointment others but that is a chance you have to take. Thanks for letting tell my story.
i tried this 2 days in a row. and all it did was give me lots of cramps, diarrhea and lots of vomitting. hardly worth it!
Yes..this has worked for me! Approximately 1 and a half hours after I took the maximum daily dosage, I proceeded to have contractions. The Correctol DID do what it was supposed to where evacuation of the bowels were concerned but it also brought on very strong contractions for me as well. I was already 4cm dilated when I took the medication so maybe that helped as well.
I tried this recently and all it did was make me have really bad and I do mean bad cramps and diarrhea.
I tried licorice with my second baby, and my labor started after 12 hours of eating it (at 40+6 weeks). I don't know if the candy helped or not. I'm now 39 weeks pregnant, and ate the whole box of Panda two days ago, but no baby yet. [Ed. One of the nice things about mild non-pharmaceutical approaches is that they will not bring the baby before its time.]

HERE IS A WEBSITE ON WAYS TO TRIGGER LABOR ON YOUR OWN BY THE MAYO CLINIC:http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/inducing-labor/PR00117 Sounds much better than sitting on the toilet for hours.
Can I do anything to trigger labor on my own?
Nipple stimulation — either manually or with a breast pump — may release the hormone oxytocin, which can lead to contractions. But exercise caution. Sometimes nipple stimulation can lead to excessive, potentially dangerous contractions.
Other techniques — such as having sex or eating pineapple or spicy food — aren't backed by scientific evidence. If you want to try a certain food, go for it. Sex is OK, too, as long as your water hasn't broken. But get your health care provider's OK before trying any other home remedies, herbal supplements or alternative treatments for inducing labor.

I don't really know why people ask these kinds of questions. Every ones going to have a different answer. Like I could tell you that working on my feet all day and eating a pickle will make you go into labor because that's what I was doing when I went in to labor and that's where most people come up with that stuff. But no Castro oil will just make your "friend" sick!

Castor Oil has sometimes been used to try to bring on labor. However, it is not recommended. By the nature of its intended purpose, Castor Oil will likely produce diarrhea. This may lead to dehydration which in turn may bring on contractions. If your body is not ready to go into labor yet, what will happen is you will go to the hospital, they will determine you are dehydrated and will re-hydrate you with IV fluids. When you are re-hydrated, your body will stop having contractions. Every pregnant woman gets to that point when they wish their baby would just get here already and they are willing to try anything to get things moving. Tell your friend NOT to take Castor oil. She can try walking, having sex, nipple stimulation (not to much or too roughly), or eating spicy foods. But, none of these things worked for me. I tried them all plus lots more suggestions, too. All 4 of my babies went 5-11 days past their due date. Nothing I did made labor come any faster.

Dispite what alot of people will tell you on here, its not dangerous to you or the baby. The only danger is from dehydration. It will not cause the baby to have a bowel movement. If that happens its usually because the baby is already overdue and under stress. My Dr. recommended me taking it and I did. I took 3 tbsp yesterday. Did'nt work for me though.I just pooped alot. I think it did help me lose my mucus plug though!. You can try sex, walking, eating fresh pineapple, evening primrose tabs ( prick them and put them up next to your cervix) and bouncing on a birthing ball. Back to the castor oil- it works by causing bowel spasms which stimulate the uterus causing contractions. Good luck hope everything works out!

No - don't use castro oil. It's very dangerous! I see that other people gave you excellent advice (being intimate, going for walks), so, if that doesn't work, ask your friend to have just a little more patience: 'it' is well worth the wait!

I took it and it did nothing. However afterwards I read that it is extremely bad for you and baby. It is not recommended for pregnant women. It is actually supposed to be a remedy for constipation.
Know a few people who took it, had no problems and it started their labour but I felt awful once I read that.

Please do not do this. It can be dangerous, causing meconium to mix with the amniotic fluid, potentially harming the baby. Not to mention as said above, ewww. Try some real hot and spicy chili, i did this with my second and was in labor 7 hours later. GL :)

my grandma swears it works, she gave it to her younger sisters and her nieces but when it came to me, she tried but i refused, i didn't want to have the icky side effects of pooping all day long and was scared if i took it i would poop while having the baby. so i had to be induced at 41 weeks.
