If artificial intelligence is one day created, will it not pose a philosophical problem, because humans themselves are just biological intelligent creatures. If we make robots work for us, and use them as slaves, won't we be undermining their rights? Slavery is a wrong thing when applied to humans, but what about when it applies to robots?

Hey, shine_radiantstar, I believe your statement of a soul to be false. We are complex organisms with great intellect that has come to be after about 3 million years of evolution. There is no such thing as a soul. On the other hand, AI which will be implemented in robots might not be perfect at first but it will also come to the stage we are in now and perhaps in a lot less time. Then it might also be able to express feelings and creativity. Don't be so quick to judge the AI before they even exist. I believe Isaac Asimov to be the greatest science fiction writer of all time, and he has written the greatest stories about robots. There is one such short story called "The Bicentennial Man". You should check it out. It is very close to what we have talked about here.

Excellent question! To give artificial intelligence is to give it a conscious. If it is offended by the fact that we use them for slavery then yes - it will be wrong. I dont think this is something we have to worry about right soon - however with the development of feelings within a non-organic being will this question truely come into play.

To give an example - what if a human wants to be a slave and do someone's bidding with no compensation? Is this wrong? If the human is conscious and able to make his or her own desicions and are aware of what they are doing then - no ... i dont think it is wrong.

When AI comes into play... (or at least a 'true AI') the AI will have a decision to make. Do you or do you not want to serve someone? If the AI is coherant and knows what the implications are - then no... it would not be wrong.

Might I pose the question: What would be considered a True Artificial Intelligence?

Robots are different than humans. They don't have feelings, the don't feel pain, they don't question the meaning of life, any more than does a computer.

Just because it can walk, talk, perform calculations, doesn't mean it has internally the same workings of a human.

Therefore, we should only treat human like human, or better yet we should treat things only how they want to be treated. Robots wouldn't care to be slaved, unless they have built in the desires and emotional feelings as humans, then they should be respected.

But if its just a large piece of metal with software, with no emotions, or regard for life, then no, we shouldn't treat them like human: we are not hurting them - because they don't care. We must not think they care about the same things as we do; which should be the basis on our judgement on how we treat them. But if they are built in to do so, then that is when we should respect it.

Artificial intelligence has already been created, or haven't you notice how much of our day to day life is influenced by computers? So, what I really hear you asking is what if artificial intelligence becomes capable of independent, creative thought? Aha, there's the rub, because you see, it takes a living Soul to be capable of independent, creative thought. So, will Soul ever inhabit a robot??? If Soul chooses to inhabit a robot, as It does a human body, then I would think the same rules of respect for the rights of Soul would apply.

Issac Asimov wrote about this a long time ago, until they exist and ask for their rights, lets worry about issues that need dealing with today, like how did "Bucky Beaver" learn to type

No matter how advance an AI is, they can never answer the question: What color is the red truck?
