Check your water thermostat it may be frozen closed that would account for the high temp reading. The check gauges light will come on when the engine reaches a temp higher than is safe to operate at. Try changing the thermostat first if this dosent work the only other thing it could be is the water pump is going or has gone out. Good luck.

Well first of all im not a mechanic, but I'll take a stab at this question. Your check engine light could be any sort of electrical problem that has nothing to do with your heater. Im guessing you live in a cold climate and using your heater. If you are driving short distances you car may be running hot, but not overheating, because of the outside temp. Check if your fan is running when leaving in idle. Should kick on after a few moments. You may want to change the thermostat. Cheap fix. See if the car runs hot afterwards. Your heater core may be shot. If you bought used check to see if hose is actually hooked up to heater core. Some cars it is behind the glove compartment and is a nightmare to change. See if is damp on carpet on passenger side. A heater core is not expensive but the labor is. You have to pull the whole dash off to get to it practically. Good Luck, I hate when my car does crap like this and sucks money out of me.

You're probably low on coolant. That makes the gauge erratic because the coolant drops below the point of the sensor, and you don't get any hot water to the heater core.
