Mexico City is one of the largest, most populated cities in the world, with a lot of history and culture.
If you're planning to visit, I would suggest the hotels in Polanco or on Reforma.
Don't forget to visit the different museums, take the hop-on-hop-off double-decker (Turibus) to visit some of the more traditional areas (Reforma avenue, downtown, Colonia Condesa, Polanco, Lomas de Chapultepec)
Just as any large cities, it has its nasty areas.. I'd stay away from those.
You'll find friendly people willing to help :)

Good for your brother.
In 2004 I went to Sao Paulo Brazil for a few nights while on vacation. One friend from there had me so freaked out about crime I did not leave the hotel for 2 days. Very stupid of me. Yes there is crime there but I have traveled a lot and I know how to take care of myself.
Mexico City has problems. LA has problems. NYC has problems. All large metropolitan areas have problems. In every part of the world.
I have been robbed at gun point in LA. Never in Mexico City. My home has been burglarized in California. My hotel room was burglarized in Mexico City along with others. And not because I was a foriegner, but many rooms including that of Mexicans was burglarized. Both times insurance companies paid for losses.
Like any large city you need to be smart. You should carry your billfold in your front pocket, women don't carry a purse or if you do carry it will little valuables.
Use ATMs for getting cash, do bring large amounts.
Use Hotel Taxis until you learn enough to know how to use the others.
Realize this, a thief or a con man is that way to all people, not just foriegners.
Never ever pay more than 20 pesos topsssssssss for a shoe shine. There is no special was or liquid, it is all just water or vegetable oil. I go took in 1990. I learned.
My point is while it may be dangerous for some, for others no. It depends upon what you do, how you carry yourself, how big the risks you take.
It is safe if you know how to make sure you are safe. Just like any large city.
Don't let these naysayers scare you off.

If safety is your concern, Mexico City is no worse than any other big city. There's crime, poverty but the average tourist never suffers from it. Unless you are gonna get into the very dangerous neighborhoods (Tepito, Merced, Doctores, Santa Marta), take cabs without plates or going on the strees showing your foreign money all over the place you are gonna be just fine. Keep an eye on your luggae and stuff all the time, though: people here isn't mean but they take what you give. And don't believe what they say about water -you can't drink it from any faucet or hose but if it's on a table and everyone's drinking it, it surely won't kill you.

Well, as you can see there are different points of view. I have lived here for 14 years and have had more trouble in LA, NY or Boston when I visited there. Of course it has the problems of any huge city of its size, traffic, pollution, crime etc. but really no more than any other of its size.
It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Americas dating back well over a 1,000 years. Nearby are the ruins of Teotihuacan which 1500 years ago was one of the most advanced and largest cities on the Earth.
There is simply so much to see and do, from the pyramids, the huge famous floating gardens of Xochimilco, the Zona Rosa, the old colonial area of Coyoacan, the central Zocalo, the famous Chaputepec Park and its castle, the Mariachis of Garabaldi Plaza, the markets and artisans everywhere, the huge variety of bars, discos, clubs, and night life in general, its a real treat.
There are just so many museums, historical places, colonial buildings and so on as well as the greatest collection of regional Mexican restaurants on Earth. What do you like? Arrachera Norteña? barbacoa from Hidago? the famous morisqueta and carnitas from Michoacan? birria from Jalisco? huachinago al mojo de ajo from Vera Cruz? cochinita pibil from the Yucatan? a pizza-like tlyuda from Oaxaca? chipilin soup from Chiapas? mutton mixiote from Tlaxcala? fish and seafood tacos from Guerrero? guacamayas from Guanajuato? No matter whatever speciality in Mexican food you prefer you can find it here in Mexico City (in abundance and high quality)!
It may not be a vacation spot for every one, But I assure you if you come, you will run out of time long before you run out of things to do and see!

I was in Winnipeg 3 weeks ago..and in Mexico City...1 week ago... well....is not as cold as in Winnipeg (this morning it was -29C and in Mexico 7 C) but ...be careful in Mexico City.... certainly..do not drink water from the tap..and avoid Tepito, Neza and southern neighborhoods...is like all the metropolitan cities around the world..where there are certain zones that should be avoided...but historic downtown, zona rosa are is nice to stroll around ...How long is your brother planning to take for this trip???... I am planning something alike but from Vancouver to Panama City.

It's a huge city and as all have safe and unsafe places and safe and unsafe actions; it's beautyfull, never sleeps and have lots of things to know; usually people don't even bother you. I would try to find somebody to go with, it's always better, safer, somebody to talk to and with a diferent point of view. Know downtown is must, just take a look at the news or ask somebody if the is any "manifestacion" you know lots of people toghter waisting their time and with chances of geting you stuck. Have fun!!!

Yeah driving in Mex. City is pretty crazy...it's not necessary to drive...just take the subway anywhere...it's the cheapest in the world at only 2 pesos (approx. $0.18 USD).
