RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Rest the bruised area, put ice on the injured area (10-20 minutes on, 10-20 minutes off to avoid frostbite), compress the area with an elastic bandage, and elevate the injured area as much as you can.

The most affective thing you can do is :
First 48 Hours - Ice Fermentation
Next 2 Weeks - Hot Water Fermentation
Get some ointment too. It helps.

Ice. As much as you can stand.

When you take the ice off, put on some comfrey ointment (like Burt's Bees Res-Q Ointment.) No lie--it really helps heal up my bruises.

Eat plenty of vitamin-C rich foods (citrus, broccoli, stuff like that.)

And don't go too heavy on aspirin--it makes your blood thinner and it can pool in the poor little smashed capillaries in your bruises.

if the bruises are severe, i would consider going to the doctor to make sure that nothing is broken, and also to make sure there was no hemorrhaging. but ice and rest are the best for bruises. dont push on them or aggrivate them, and take it easy until they heal

You may want to take a pain reliever to help with any pain. Otherwise the bruise will eventually heal and fade on its own.
