Every baby i've seen does this at one time or another. They don't have complete control over their find motor skills yet.
YOu know how when you place your finger in a baby's hand it just grabs hold? It's more of an automatic reflex than a choice. So when they're upset or they just get some hair or part of their head by their hands they're going to grab and end up scratching and pulling. It's normal. Don't worry. Just keep your baby's nails trim or you could try and get those little baby mittens for them. I hope this helps ease your mind.

RE:
Is it normal for babies to scratch their head and pull their hair?
My baby does this only when she's crying. She's drawn some blood on her scalp, and pulls out her hair.

How old is she? My son did this when he was about 3 months old. Poor thing would draw blood too and then have a few little scabs on his head. He never did pull out his hair though. Luckily that phase went really fast, I would say 2 weeks. I'd suggest mittens if she's young enough but my boy would rip those off....=(

I would say it is perfectly normal,my son is 4 and a half months and he does the same thing, try cutting her nails and she may not draw blood.Again my son did too now i trim his nails every 4 or 5 days,he has no hair to pull so he usually grabs his ears and screams when he is hungry or has gas.I would not worry, you can always take her to your doc for reassurance.I have also seen many of my friends babes do it too.
