It's said that it can slow the delivery but is not 100% proven. Each person is different! I said I wasn't going to have one due to this - however, once I started feeling those contractions and they kept getting more intense... I wanted to enjoy my labor and delivery not be in horrible pain from my contractions.
Now each person is different, I thought I had a high tolerance for pain till I felt true contractions. That was a pain I didn't enjoy at all and wanted to enjoy the birth of my son without that pain.
Just my 2 cents :-)

Personally I think it slowed my labour down from when I had the first epidural - I started getting contractions at noon, at 2:30pm was 7cm dilated, had an epidural, and it then took till jjust before midnight for me to have the baby.
I couldn't feel to push, and the baby's heart rate started dropping so I had to have an assisted delivery - obviously there is no way to prove it but I think the epidural was probably the major factor. I had frequent top-ups, and had to have it re-sited too.

it does slow down the second stage of delivery. Unfortunately I had to have one with both of my children due to slow progress. You cannot feel a lot under the knees as it where, but the baby in the end is worth every thing. I could not feel the lower part of my body for a few hours after the birth but soon sensation soon returned.

having an epidural actually helped my labor along, It gave me a chance to relax. I went from 3 cm to 10cm in about 1 1/2 hours after having the epidural. The turned it down slightly so that I could feel pressure *but no pain* to push. I only pushed for about 30 min.

Once you are that far into labor it shouldn't. I was concerned about the epidural stalling my labor and didn't want to get it until I was further along, but the nurses conviced me to get it before I was ever in any pain. The assured me that they could just give more pitocin if it stalled. It seemed to work just fine for me. I never pushed the button to top mine off, but when it came time to push I really wish that I had!!

it depends if you've got a good midwife on duty,by rights they supposed to give you an internal before giving you the 2nd dose, the midwife i had with my first pregnancy gave me the epidural,THEN gave me the internal, the babies head was there, and she was telling me to push,i couldnt because i had no feeling in my legs etc, which caused me to get upset, because i felt so numb, half an hour later after being told they'd use forceps/suction cap i eventuully pushed my daughter into the world,i've had 3 more children since, all born with just gas and air(entonox),quick births, felt everything, best feeling ever,i would advise every pregnant woman against the epidural!

Didn't slow mine. However it also didn't work. Felt everything, which is really not fun when you don't want to.
Oh and then after he was born I started to go numb all the way to my neck, and then it got hard to talk. I couldn't even hold my baby after he was born cause my arms were numb and I was afraid I'd drop him.
As far as slowing it down, it started to wear off 1.5hrs before he was born, they topped me up 45mins before. OB broke my water (I was 7cm and baby was at -2 station) and 20mins later baby was out.
They also tried to give me more after he was born so the OB could do a manual extraction without it being excruciatingly painful and that didn't work either.

It can definately slow the second stages of labor, not to mention CAN be harmful to the baby... then again, any drug while in labor/pregnancy can harm the child. Check out parentcenter.com They are great and give tips and advice from pregnancy to controlling teenagers..
