I can only see the upside to the legalization of prostitution. Instead of paying a vice squad to try to stop it (which is impossible, hence the term "the world's oldest profession"), it could be a source of revenue through taxes. Legalized bordellos can be better regulated that street prostitution, resulting in *reduced* incidence of STDs (this is evidenced in legalized bordellos in Nevada). Whenever the government tries to legilate morality, good money is thrown after bad and the behavior continues unabated.

I just want to point out something that most people don't realize. For professional hookers, STD's are usually none. If a professional hooker gets an STD, they pretty much lose their livelyhood when they get a bad rep. Most people think of hookers as the girl on the street corner, which in that case....yes you will probably get an STD. If you are talking professional prostitution however, that is a different story, and I'm assuming that's what is meant by legalized prostitution here. Brothels that are required to go through regulation would no doubt have some pretty strict health codes they would have to enforce.

Making prostitution legal would certainly not cut down on drug use. The prostitutes that use drugs are typically hooking BECAUSE they are on drugs, and they need an easy way to make money.
That being said, I think that there's room for legalized prostitution as long as it's regulated.

Yes !
In Holland they are checked every month for STI s and if they have one then they loose there prostitution licence. They are properly educated on safe sex using condoms always so the risk is minimized.
By legalizing it ,it provides a safe enviornment for the workers , they are not on their own or on the streets, it is safer for the customers since there are inspections for STDs or STIs.
The government can actually tax their earnings unlike right now, cash is used mainly. And any drug use can be more controlled and also tested . The sex tourism is big $ many go to Thailand for example , if people that are going to do it anyways might as well keep the money here .

STD may become a problem but if they implement a Monthly STD testing like the Porn Industry does that will decrease the risk. But should it be legal yes. At the same time we could have harsher laws against illegal prostitution and Pimps. I'm talking about mandatory sentence of 15yrs. No chance of parole
Because right now it's an endless cycle arrest prostitute she makes bail. repeat. and I would much rather have the police out looking real criminals.

Well, I think it should be legal, the chances of women getting STD's are everywhere, but women who have sex with different men for free still get it, this is a free country so why not let people make their money. There is the same amount of risks being a prostitute as their are having sex with some guy you met, he could still give you an STD and besides, all dating is, is a form of prostitution, guys pay for the girl's movie, dinner, clothes, jewelry and etc.

Yes - legalizing prostitution would free the prostitutes from being dominated and abused by their pimps. And it would resolve a lot of legal hypocracy - why is a lapdance legal, but prostitution illegal? And, quite frankly, there are a LOT of women who date men for their money - why is that kind of prostitution legal, but the other kind isn't?

I think it should be legal!! The question would be how to go about it...Brothels make the girls get health checks every week and provide a safe environment.
Illegally it makes lots of room for more serious crimes- pimps, drugs, stealing etc
I think it would help prevent the men from getting ripped off too in a controlled setting...

I think woman are demoralized enough without legalizing prostitution. Maybe we could spend our resources raising the standard of living for working mothers.

Nevada has successfully shown us that it can be done and regulated in a safe way. I'd rather those folks do it and pay taxes like everybody else instead of it happening undergroud. I think this will happen soon though, just as more and more states are accepting gambling.
