Has it become so pervasive that nothing or nobody can stand in its way and we are all resigned to policing our children when and if they come in contact with it.

The question is fairly generalized, this I must admit.

Computers in general tend to isolate people, that is a given.

I believe the internet is a tool like any another. Obviously a great place for information, exchanging ideas, locating consumer goods, communication, you know all of this.

Regarding children, we are already policing them on their way to school, playgrounds, driving them to activities. I don't of many that are permitted to walk about on their own or are free to play outside of their parents vision on the streets where they live.

Some people will talk to or approach children on the street, bus, school, home telephones, our front doors, anywhere for that matter if they are alone or presumed alone.

Parents are certainly responsible for monitoring internet use in the home, hopefully out in the open - the living room or kitchen because it is a communication tool.

Society is more complicated with new technologies and there are more risks together with the added benefits. Irrational people also keep up with internet and anything else going on.

Vigilance and common sense combined with educating ourselves and our children is the best we can do.

There are some nasty people out there but here are some really good people too.

Cheers!

I wouldn't call it destruction of society, but I do think that we are past a point that we are now dependent upon what it can do for us. Before e-mail, you wrote letters and mailed them, along with photos and such. Before Netflix, you drove to the video store. Before Napster and iTunes, you bought CDs at the music store. Before online shopping, you ordered catalogs or just went to the store. As I see it, internet is part of how we as humans have evolved and society is shaped not destroyed by it.

As for protecting children online, it has to be done but no one should make look harder than it is. What you do is have the family computer in a prominent part of the home so they will feel compelled not to do something dangerous. If you put a computer into a child's bedroom, do not have it connected to the internet. Also, while protection software like NetNanny and CyberPatrol may seem promising, keep in mind that not every inappropriate site may be filtered and places like chat rooms and message boards are often still accessible.

The best thing to do is always keep a watch on what they do, like it or not. Being with them as they use the internet can also serve as part of the learning process as you explain to your kids about how to look up a website from a search engine and making sure that it's legitimate and not a "porn trap". Eventually they will be able to go online themselves and make proper judgments. At that point though, still keep an eye on what they do to make sure that they don't rebel against what you teach them. The bottom line is, you have a responsibility as a parent or guardian to see to it that your kids don't get themselves, as well as you, in trouble.

It's destroying society as much as money, religion, radicalism, journalism, entertainment, climate change, greed, love, fear, terror, nationalism, politics, medicine, hunger, science, art, acceleration, and our humanity in general.

At the same time the gaps that are left by the destruction are filled by new things. It's called progress ... even if it's really only change.

I suggest you consider taking delight in learning how to dance to the new tunes as we grow older, as door close new ones open ...

Generally speaking I would say yes people are spending so much time in front of a monitor that they don't leave home.
