First of all, you need to make sure this is a hobby/passion. If it's a phase, then you'll give up way too easy. You know that. The best thing you can do until you get an instructor lined up is to purchase a book of chords, and if you know anyone that plays, (even if they aren't willing to teach you) just ask them if you're forming the chords right. In buying the book, try to get one that has pictures of hands. Begin there... but keep looking for an instructor. Don't start any bad habits- when you get older they're really hard to break!

I'm in exactly the same situation! I got a Fender Squire about 3 years ago and I have alot of mates who play and are in bands and everything. One tried to teach me, but they kinda lost patience. I tried using tabs off the net, but the only things I can play are the bass in The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army and Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop instrumental. I think the only way is to get someone professional to teach you. I know you say it's difficult to arrange for someone to help you, but unless you have any willing mates, I'd say a proper teacher is your best bet!

I taught myself to play guitar. I just found a website online that had all of the chord diagrams. Then I would find song websites that wouldn't put the songs in tablature. Instead they would just type out the lyrics and put the chord above the lyrics, so that you would know when to play the chord. After I mastered all of the basic chords, I moved on to learning how to read tablature. I found a website that taught how to read tablature, and it took me a while to get the hang of it, but I can do it pretty well now.
Good Luck!!

If you can't arrange taking private lessons from somebody, you could buy a beginners book....I would recommend a book that includes a DVD, so that you can actually see how things should be done, so that you don't develop any bad habits of doing things the wrong way. Make sure that the book you buy is for beginners!
Good luck!

You can get lessons from a local music shop, and if not there then they will send you in a right direction. Also you can go to tab sites to learn how to play songs. It's easy to play tabs when you slow down the song and once you get used to it you can play it faster. It takes a lot of time and patience to learn how to play.

you can already play.....whether or not people think you can should not be your worry. If you see a painting you may go that is a terrible painting, but to somone else it is a master piece. When you stop listening to what everyone else is doing and hear the beat of your own drum, you will be happy about your ability to play. How you play now may be sweet music to someone elses ears.

don't try and teach yourself it takes alot of effort and is alot harder, but search a directory because there is alot of guitar teachers out there, or go to a secondary school, alot of the teachers there teach outside of school aswell , its worth asking
