Mel's Diner on Geary Boulevard is perfect for American diner food. Lots of selections, good quality, balloons, crayons for the kids and a special kids' menu. There are even certain kid meals served in a cardboard serving dish (to keep) of a convertible car.
Chinese restaurants are among the most child-friendly. Chinese culture values and includes children at restaurants. Visiting Chinatown is a wonderful and exciting experience. Though there are many restaurants from which to choose, some of the very best Chinese restaurants are in the Richmond and Sunset Districts of SF. My personal favorite is Ton Kiang on Geary Boulevard near 22nd Avenue. If you go on Sunday, there will be a long wait but worth it. Sunday is the big day for family get-togethers over a restaurant meal. It is worth it, however, for the dim sum on Sundays. Dim sum is the original "small plates" experience. Servers bring a wide assortment of tasty dishes on carts directly from the kitchen. As they come by, you choose or decline the offerings as you wish. You are charged a la carte for each item chosen. The food is really, really good, and dim sum experience is alot of fun.
There is also a guidebook available at Borders or Barnes and Noble of "Places To Go With Children in Northern California." You may be able to get it through Amazon.com. It is well worth the price.
Wishing you a great visit!

China town is a great choice. They'll have fun picking out their favorite dim sum. Then you could go and watch fortune cookies being made. Gharideli Square is lots of fun and there are lots of restaurants serving countless types of cuissine to choose from, indoors and out. Fishermans Warf, The Presidio, North Beach, SF Zoo, and on and on...You'll find most anything you and the kids would like somewhere in the city. With all of the busses, Bart system, and the famous Trolly, nothing is very far away. I suggest taking the trolly first and by the time you get to the warf, you'll have plenty of your own ideas. Wish I were going with you, I'm hungry just writting this. Enjoy.

I love SF! Take your kids down to pier 39. We had a wonderful time there. There are many shops and restaurants. If you go, make sure to try the magic carpet ride. China town has GREAT food, but it's not a nice part of town. You have to go to Alcatraz. You are going to love it. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about SF. It's AWESOME!

Depending on how open minded you are and the maturity /sophistication level of your children, ASIA SF could be a really memorable meal. The waiters and performers are all in drag and the floor show and food are really good.

Puccini & Pinetti in Union Square is great kids place. For chinese try dim sum lunch at Gold Mountain on Broadway.
Kids may like Max's Diner too, but you will enjoy yourself at P&P
Rainforest is pkay but they are a chain; Pier 39 also has chains or nonkid friendly places.
Asia SF has drag queen waiters, fun but be prepared!!
