You are asking the right question, a rare question.
Think of your area of concern as a circle. A very selfish person's circle only includes themselves. We can push this circle out to include more people. This circle is changing size all the time. If someone attacks your ideas or bullies you it can get very small.
You will attract friends if that circle includes other people and also if that circle is stable people will notice. If it changes size often and some people are in and other times people are out people notice also.
Of course being a good friend may mean you are not getting the friendship back in the same measure. A consequence of a wider stable circle of concern is that you may realize what is right may not feel good.
I think you are on track, keep exercising your conscience, admit that you make mistakes. Ideas are separate from people, they should stand on their own legs. People still become attached to ideas so be sensitive to this. Try not to judge other people unless the judgment relates to an actual decision you are making and you will be fine.
Good luck and don't be discouraged.

I agree with Shaheerah being yourself goes a long way towards building good friendships. Being honest also helps. Since you're already friendly, kind AND helpful, I think you're off to a great start.

be yourself, treat your friends and everyone else good and with respect, don't gossip about something that you're not sure is true (i would know lol), and as long as your friendly and nice you shouldn't have much trouble making friends and keeping them
