I have a 12 year old grand daughter. I think she ought to have a cell phone for safety purposes. Tell your parents that if you are ever in a dangerous situation that a cell phone would help you. Don't tell them all of your friends have one. They won't listen. Parents do listen to safety concerns though. Good luck. I think you ought to have one.

You're 11. You don't need one. I was 20 by the time I got my first cell phone. If you really think you need one, earn money to buy it and pay the bill. That's the best way to validate you're mature and ready to have one. Then if you go over you minutes, your parents won't be paying, you will. Pretty good check and balance right there.

My kids won't even be allowed to ask for a cell phone before they're 16.

My son wanted a cell phone at your age, and what we did first, was we gave him a walkie-talkie, and told him that if he used it (we kept the other one as he went out) and took care of it, then he could have more freedom, like going on walks and going to the park (we live in Indiana in a small town, so it may be different for you) anyway, as his freedom expanded, so did the need for us to reach him. He took care of the walkie talkie and proved to us that he would take care of a cell phone, so on his 12th birthday, he got a black razr phone.

Maybe if you go to your parents and suggest the same plan, and prove that you will take care of the phone by taking care of the walkie talkie (charging it, remembering to take it with you when you go out, and using it to check in, also remembering to bring it HOME when you go somewhere, keeping it clean and close at hand, and keeping the battery charged on the other handset too!) then they will see that it's not something you will treat like a toy, and you are ready to take some responsibility.

Be ready for more chores to be expected, Hon, because nothing comes free. My son earned a cell phone and a little bit of freedom, but he also earned more responsibility around the house. You should expect that too, and be ready to do a good job. Show your parents that you are ready to move from "child" to "pre-teen" and maybe they'll come around.

Good luck!

Cell phones can be expensive, if over-used.
I got my first cell phone when I was 16, never cared to have one before then. Only reason I got my cell phone, was because I was driving, and didn't have a very reliable vehicle.

Don't want something just because your friends have it. They aren't all that great, I assure you.

Sorry, but you really don't need one til 8th or 9th grade. I definately recommend one for high school, but before then, you really don't need it. But if you really want one, why don't you earn enough to pay the bill each month? But odds are not ALL of your friends have one. I have friends in college who still haven't gotten one. I think you can wait a year or two. But good luck anyways!
