The movie was rated PG-13. So you can go from that. I think it is different as a musical. Lots more dancing and singing. Hopefully the story doesn't get lost. I would say go for it if you child is around that age. Younger kids may get scared by the scissor hands.

The ballet is, dont know about the musical. If its half as boring as the ballet they'll be asleep. And I like Ballet!
