I live in a very small town, the nearest town with an OBGYN is an hour - hour and half away. The family doctor here deliveres babys, but do you think it will be as good of care as an OBGYN?

He has delivered alot of babys and if there is a problem they could transfer me right? Help!

Also what week to they usualy do a sonagram? thanks!

OMG! These answers are totally WRONG! YES, you need an OB! Their job is to deliver babies, not just the high-risk ones. And sonograms are a NORMAL part of prenatal care. They must be done about 3 times to check for any problems and also to check for growth. They are absolutely not harmful to your baby.

Do not trust yourself to a family doctor at all. You need to make time to drive to an OB for your visits. You cannot take any chances with your health and he health of your baby.

I'm sorry, but some folks on here just don't have a clue. It makes me wonder if they have ever been pregnant before. I'm 35 weeks, and I have a 13 year-old at home. It's amazing to me to hear some of the responses on here.

Please call and speak with an OB!!

An OB/GYN is not necessary for a normal healthy pregnancy. In fact, they can be detrimental. If there is a family doctor there that has been delivering babies for many years, then that doctor is just fine. Even better would be a midwife, but it's all personal preference. I've had 4 full term pregnancies. First two were with an OB, third with a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) and the 4th with no one but me. The ones with the OB left me with a scar on my belly and uterus, scar tissue on my perinium and emotional scars. The CNM was slightly better and my easiest birth, but the pregnancy was filled with such stress that it made me nuts. My absolute best pregnancy was my 4th. No pressure, no ridiculous tests, no ultrasounds, no nothing. Choose wisely. You can't take it back and do it over.

I would NEVER see an OB unless I had some very specific problems during pregnancy. OBs are a surgical specialty and should only be reserved for high risk pregnancies.

Also ultrasounds are not recommended during routine prenatal care, only to check for specific problems.

The care from a family doctor compared to an OB mostly depends on the individual doctor. However a family doctor will likely have more time for you during appointments.

maybe you could concider a midwife that's closer to you for help in delivering, but that family doctor should be fine if you need one during your pregnancy. they've been delivering babies forever, all this new stuff and babies don't turn out any differently. if there's a problem, they are qualified, they will know what to do, but if you're really uncomfortable, maybe it's time for a long trip into the city just to put your mind at ease.

I think that if he is a general practioner and has been doing for years I think that he would be a good doctor. If you don't like him then you can go see another doctor with no problem. If I remember right they do a sonogram at about 26-28 wks.
