It's most likely your mucous plug coming out. It's what blocks your cervix while pregnant. Don't worry. You will probably go into labor this week sometime though. When you start to get undulating cramps from your back to your stomach that are 3-5 minutes apart, get to the doctor/hospital.

Alright, we seem to have a wealth of good AND bad information in the previous answers.
Yes, this probably was your mucus plug. It is also referred to as "show" or "bloody show". This is a small amount of mucus that closes the opening of the cervix during pregnancy. Some women notice losing it, others do not.
However, if you are not experiencing contractions, and your water has not yet broken, there is no need for concern, or to contact your doctor as of yet. The mucus plug can remain in place through the beginning of labor, only releasing once you are several centimeters dialated, but most of the time, it is expelled 1-2 weeks before the beginning of labor.
You say you are 40.5 weeks pregnant, but you need to remember a few things. This date is most accurate only if you have precise 28 day cycles, ovulating exactly on the 14th day of your cycle each month. Most women don't even know when they're ovulating. If you ovulated sooner or later, the date is wrong.
However, even if your due date was correct, carrying a baby for up to 42 weeks is absolutely fine.
If you begin having contractions, either now or within the next week or so, be sure to have a watch handy to time them. If you experience 5 or more contractions within 1 hour, meaning you are having regularl contractions about every 12 minutes, you should contact your doctor or go to the hospital. Since your doctor is a bit further away, if you are driving 4 hours to deliver, you might want to call when your contractions are more like 15-18 minutes apart.
Also, remember to time your contractions correctly, the space between contractions is timed from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next, not the end of one to the beginning of the next....If one begins at 1:15:00 (15 minutes after 1:00 and zero seconds), and the next begins at 1:35:00, they are 20 minutes apart.
Good Luck!

from what I was told when you loose your mucus plug and it is bloody labor will usually start within the next 48 hours. I would call your doctor and just let him know. But keep in mind you can also lose your plug and still be a week or more away, it all depends on baby. With my first daughter I lost it a month in advance in little pieces and it was not bloody, I was induced at 41 weeks. I am now 40 weeks pregnant and still have not seen a plug.

Passage of "bloddy show," a mucous discharge tinged pink or brown with blood, is usually a sign that your cervix is effacing and/or dilating and that the process that leads to delivery is well under way. But it's a process with an erratic timetable that will keep you in suspense until the first true contractions. Based on averages, chances are good that you'll fell those contractions within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. But, because everyone's timetable is different, labor might also be less than an hour away, with dilation occurring rapidly. Or a few days away, with it taking its sweet time.
If your discharge should suddenly become bright red, especially if it seems to amount to more than an ounce (about 2 tablespoons), contact your practitioner immediately.
So basically, you wait a while longer. Until contractions start or your water breaks. Good Luck!

You are losing your mucous plug. There is no guaranteed "time" from when you begin to lose your mucous plug until you deliver, as every pregnancy and delivery is different. I lost my mucus plug with two of mine WHILE I was in labor, and with the third I began to lose it in the morning and had him that night. If your Doc. is 4 hours away, you SHOULD call, as he will probably want to start driving? At least call and let him know.. If you are close to a hospital, just wait until your contractions are about 5 to 10 minutes apart before you go..or if your water breaks. Your body is getting ready to have this baby soon..but how soon is soon, no one could tell ya! :-)
Congrats!!

It's probably your mucus plug. I lost mine early in the morning and then my water broke about 3:30 that afternoon, but I didn't have her until 7:40am the next morning. Everyone's pregnancy is different so you may go into labor today, tomorrow, or in a week or two. When you loose the mucus plug it doesn't mean that you need to go to the hospital, unless you are having contractions. It just means you're getting close to holding your baby.

whya re you so far from your doctor?? pregnant women who are close to their due date are supposed to stay near their home base hospital, that way when they do go into labor they are pre-registered at their hospital and their doctor is on call there.
go back home and wait for the contractions to start. you probably lost your mucous plug. that could mean that your labor is going to start today, tomorrow or next week.
i would relax, go home and hang out. eventually, you will start contractions and that's when you want to go to the hospital. wait until they make you not be able to talk and they come frequently. use your mommy instincts...you'll know when it's time to go...i promise!
tkae care.

it's your mucous plug, that's a good thing!! You dont need to see your doctor, you are full term. Just wait for your next appt or wait for labour. Now, if you have fluid, like your water breaking, that needs to be reported to your dr asap

You passed your mucous plug. Call your doctors office to let them know. You should have your baby within 24 hours or so after passing the mucous plug.
