The Democratic donkey existed before Nast drew it. It was adopted by Andrew Jackson, the Democratic candidate for President in 1828 in response to being called a "jackass" by his opponent. Nast used the symbol of a donkey kicking a lion in 1870 to represent the Democratic party.

The GOP (Republican) Elephant was used by Nast to represent Republicans and was first published in 1874 when he dipicted an elephant walking across and destroying the flimsy planks of the Democratic party. In some states, the Eagle is used to represent Republicans.
