1. people confuse him with pre hajj Malcolm X
2. people don't know that there were Jewish people, Latinos, women, ethnic whites among others, etc in the movement as well. and by people, i mean whites, blacks, etc. Which is entirely the fault of schools. I know many, many people who still think that Rosa Parks was just very tired one day, and just didn't want to get up (when in fact she was chosen for her light skin color, demeanor amongst other things to sit in the front of the bus on that day as part of the protest. even the clothing she wore was debated on).
3. we just need to inform ourselves.
edit: however the holiday was a political ploy to garner votes and is divisive. I'm willing to change the name, perhaps to Civil Rights Day or something, to include everyone

You know what, that is a very good question. I am black myself, and very educated. I think Martin Luther King did fight for all people, but he was just about talking about freedom for blacks and whites to live together, he doesn't so much talk about other nationalilities. But I believe other ethnicities have a right to celebrate also because, as Martin paved the way for a non segragational country he also paved the way for others. People make it seem like it was segragation only aganist black people but that isn't the truth, there just was alot of it that was posted. white people where also experienced "you white, you not enter." Now, what blacks had, may not have been much, but what we had, we made sure that no whites were allowed, in turn whites did the same. The white man had more first so therefore they would have more when segragation started. So the blacks got whatever they had and didnt share it. Therefore blacks and whites had a interelationship in segrattion. Therefore, all nationalities should be able to celebrate the day a man who fought for peace for EVERYONE, not just blacks.

He fought for equality of the black ppl. But it is not a black thing it is a human being thing. He fought for blacks to be treated with the same respect that every race deserves. His Birthday isn't for blacks its for humanity a celebration of a man brave enough to take a stand for what he believed in..Just 1 man & look what he achieved. He is a role model for every race, every human being.

for the same reason people think Jesus is a white guy, not an olive skin middle eastern. people create their own versions of hero's. and the black culture aligns itslef with MLK's mission. just like when a Mexican does well at something, the entire country jumps for joy.
shared commonality creates the sense of unique representation.
the blacks also think that anything not supporting them must be a white conspiracy.

maybe because he's black. Look at George Washington, he fought for the liberty of this country, why do some people think that's a WHITE THING?

I for one know it's to be celebrated by everyone. People sometimes don't realize how much of a difference he made for not just black people, but for everyone.

The modern day black people make it that way, thats why. They turn everything into color and he fought for "us" (the blacks) not everyone like you said.

Because there are many other ethnic groups that have had great leaders and they don't have their own day of celebration.
