Maybe it means that if people didn't just have sympathy for other people's misfortunes but actually tried to do something about it there would be less trouble in the world?

It could mean "if there was less sympathy and more of an expectation that people buck up".....
It could mean that sympathy can sometimes be the good intentions of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions".
It could mean that sympathy is a way of letting a whole lot of mistakes go without notice.

Showing care by not trying to make a person happy with material objects but with feelings and affection. That's what sympathy is to me. And if there were more of it in the world then there might be more peace and less greed and poverty.

It means that they were stoned when they thought of it, it's good in theory but not in principle, if we wer meant to be blessed with peace and serenity and euphoria in this world God would give it to us, I dont mind knowing that we live in some turmoil, it makes us stronger in character and at times not with all parents it helps me to strive to be a better parent and teahc my child what is right, wron,g just, injust, I dont believe people have much sympathy to begin with for humanity if they did we wouldnt have hunger, poverity, pedophiles, rapist, druggies, drunks and everything else that strips us of human innocence
