A shop sign hanging off the edge of a wall weighting 201 N is supported by a uniform 129 N beam of length = 1.70 m. The guy wire connecting the sign is D=1.36 m from the backboard. The angle the uniform beam supporting the sign and the wall makes is 39.2 degrees.

What is the tension in the guy wire?

What is the horizontal force exerted by the hinge on the beam?

What is the vertical force exerted by the hinge on the beam?

I have been working on this for hours but all the teacher has given us to work this problem is a torque equation, which I don't think helps in this question. Please help!!!

There is no way for anyone to help you answer your question the way you asked it.

There is no such thing as a guy wire. A guide wire maybe?

Also, the sign can not weight 201 Newtons. N is a force. Nothing can weight a force.

You need to provide a picture. You mention a sign, wall, beam, wire, backboard and hinge. What is the actual schematic? I have read your statement and can't picture it.

Draw a free body diagram.

Try to sum the moments (torques) about the hinge.

Solve for the unknowns.

Assuming I understand your question correctly:

Sum moments about the hinge:
Mh = 0: 1.36Ty - .85*330 = 0
Ty = 280.5/1.36 = 206.25 N

Tension T = Ty/cos39.2 =266.15 N

Sum forces in the X direction:
Fx = 0: hx - Tx = 0
where Tx = Tcos50.8 = 168.21 N
hence, hx = 168.21 N

Sum forces in the Y direction:
Fy = 0: hy + Ty = 129 + 201 = 330
hy = 330 - 206.25 = 123.75 N

1. Find the center of mass of the beam+sign
2. Find the vertical force from your torque equation
3. Use tangent to find horizontal force
4. Use Pythagorean thm for guy wire force.
