Methane (CH4) is the simplest form of chemical made of carbon and hydrogen. It is produced in many ways, from decomposition or digestion (yes, cow digestion) (and also human digestion).
It is also produced from large deposits of organic matter (like forests or piles of dead bodies of sea animals) that get buried in the earth for millions of years and become coal or petroleum. When some kinds of fuels break down, often the pieces can be methane... so, gasoline (C7H16) is almost equivalent to 7 or 8 molecules of methane stuck together. Wood is built up mainly of molecules (C6H12O6) which are roughly equivalent to six molecules of methane stuck together with some extra oxygen. So, you could make methane out of gas or wood.

In nature, methane (CH3) can occur in the atmosphere as a result of the reaction of carbon and hydrogen accreting during planet formation. The gas giant planets have lots of methane. On earth, methane tends to be a fossil fuel, formed from the decay of prehistoric plant materials, or a product of bacterial action (fermentation) of carbon containing material as in the environment or in the guts of herivorous animals.

Methane is produced by living organisms (namely bacteria) under conditions where there is no oxygen. This includes in the digestive systems of animals and people, in swamps, in landfills, and in many other places. Bacteria make it by breaking down organic material, like bits of dead plants. Methane is just the waste product that is left over, kind of like the carbon dioxide you breathe out.
