"Hunted" Recap
Supernatural's back. Oh, how it's back. From the opening strains of White Rabbit – and it's about time they used some female-fronted classic rock – to the final twist, this episode had us glued to the set. Hi show! We missed you!

An angsty young man is talking to his shrink about the dreams he's been having. No, it's not Sam – his name is Scott, and he can fry things with his touch. The Yellow-Eyed Man haunts his dreams and wants him to do bad, bad things. Well, that's not good. Someone agrees, and stabs Scott to death in a parking lot.
Let's see, what were the guys talking about when we last saw them? Oh, yeah, the big secret. What did John tell Dean about Sam? "He just said that I had to save you, and nothing else mattered. And that if I couldn't – I had to kill you. He said that I might have to kill you, Sammy." Why? John left that part out. Grrr. Sam is understandably freaked and more than a little pissed. Dean begs Sam to lay low for a little while, to give him time to think. Sam doesn't say no, but he doesn't agree either – he steals a car and makes his getaway. Apparently his research led him to an abandoned house somewhere. He picks the lock, sneaks in – and sets off a tripwire attacked to a grenade. We're left with a boom, a blood spatter, and a smoking boot. Enter Ava, waking from a nightmare -- she just dreamed Sam's death.
Sam goes to the roadhouse, looking for answers. Ellen tells him Dean's been calling, but Sam doges the question and asks about Jo. Seems Jo took to the hunters life after that job in Philly, but Ellen doesn't blame the boys for her leaving. Sam asks Ash to look up any other kids whose mother died in a nursery fire. Ash finds four – Sam, Andy, Max and Scott, who just died. Sam decides to go to Lafayette, Ind., where Scott died, to look for clues to what the demon was up to. He checks out Scott's room and finds a collage of demonic yellow eyes, plus an assortment of prescription psychiatric meds.
When Sam goes back to the hotel, Ava is waiting there to warn him. She's convinced Sam will think she's nuts, but she needs to warn him. She is nonplussed when Sam not only takes it well, but tells her that he's psychic, too! They're all part of some big demonic plan! Ava demurs – I'm a secretary from Peoria who's about to get married, and I'm not part of anything! Still she agrees to help Sam out. She sets up an appointment with Scott's shrink and distracts him (ineptly) while Sam steals Scott's files.
Dean calls Ellen, who tells him where Sam is. Dean gets to the hotel to see Sam and Ava listening to Scott's tapes, and approves of Sam getting some nookie. That reverie is interrupted by a bullet shattering Sam's window. It's Gordon, on the roof, trying to take Sam and Ava out. Dean stops him from taking the final deadly shot, but Gordon knocks Dean out and takes him prisoner. Sam finds the shells on the roof and calls Dean for help. Dean's tied up with Gordon, and tells Sam to meet him at a creepy abandoned house – the one from Ava's vision. He drops a code word to let Sam know he's in trouble. Sam decides to go save him, even though he knows he's walking into a trap. He sends Ava home to her fiancé.
Gordon spends some quality time with Dean, trying to convince him that Sam's fair game. It seems Gordon was exorcizing a demon who mentioned that there was a war coming up, that several human kids with psychic powers were going to be soldiers in that war, and that Sam was one of those psychic kids. Dean scoffs that Gordon would believe a demon, but Gordon says he got confirmation from his own roadhouse sources. Despairing, Dean refuses to believe that Sam can't be saved, but Gordon's not having any of it. He sets a series of traps for Sam – more than just that first grenade Ava warned Sam about. Then they wait.
Dean, bound and gagged, listens helplessly as Sam picks the lock. There's an explosion – then another. Dean is horrified. Gordon goes to check the room and finds Sam's smoking boot. But it's a tick! Sam is waiting for Gordon. Sam eventually gets the upper hand, and Gordon gloats that Sam should just kill him so Dean can see the monster he's going to become. Sam declines, knocking him out instead. He frees Dean, who is bent on taking Gordon out, but Sam says Gordon is taken care of as they leave the house. Oh really? Gordon comes out shooting. The boys hide from the hail of bullets as the cops appear. Seems an anonymous tipster told them that some psycho had a weapons cache built into his car. Well done, Sammy – Gordon is caught, and he's going to jail. How long he stays there is another question.
Dean calls Ellen – how could she give Sam's secret up to a psycho like Gordon? Ellen denies that she, Ash or Jo had anything to do with it – there's a bar full of smart hunters who may have been able to put it all together. Dean makes another pitch to Sam – let's screw the job and get away from it all! There's no reason they have to keep putting their necks out fighting evil! Sam declines – he's going to face whatever destiny has in store for him head on, and if Dean wants to protect him, he'll have to keep hunting too.
Sam calls Ava to make sure she's ok, but she's not answering. He gets a bad feeling about it. The guys detour to Peoria to check things out. They find Ava's fiancé, dead on the bed, throat slit. There's sulfur on the windowsill, indicating something demonic was there. The only sign of Ava is her engagement ring, lying in a pool of her fiancé's blood.
