This may sound dumb but I'm still pretty new to computers and have a lot to learn still. I've recently started receiving tons of junk e-mail in my bulk mailbox-up to 20 a day, sometimes 15 or so all at once. I never had this before. I do know enough to not open any of them, I always delete them right away. I realize I must have given my e-mail address to a site thats passed it on to other sites, but there is no consistency to what I'm receiving. It seems to be any topic you could imagine. My question is: has the damage been done and I'm doomed to receive this stuff forever? (I just find it really annoying) Or is there a fairly easy way to make it stop? If I haven't given enough details let me know and I can add what you need to know to hopefully help me out. Thanks to all who answer.

We all get lots of bulk mail. That's what the bulk folder is for!
The spam, or most of it, has hit the bulk folder instead of your in-box. That is good and the way it is supposed to happen.
Many of these emails (spam) are automated and quite randomly picking addresses. Only start worrying if you open the bulk file and start reading some....leave them alone and delete them at will. If you don't, you email service will in a few days. Have a great day!

If you have an account with an ISP, they often give you access to set up MULTIPLE email addresses. Mine allows up to five different emails.

What you can do is create an alternate email address for your account and use that PRIVATE email for family and friends. Check on your ISP's website for more info in the Support section on how to do this.

Make sure to ask your friends and family to never go onto a website and choose options such as "Send this article to a friend" because that will store your email in their mailing list and next thing you know you are again getting loads of junk mail.

If you are situated in the states, check and see if there is a do-not-call registry in your state that applies also to email.

Whenever using email to people or websites you dont know or want to avoid them having your private email, try using an online email such as yahoo mail or gmail. You can then forward the messages to your REAL account if you need them.

Spam e-mails has become one of those things in life you can not avoid if you have an e-mail address. It's the new version of snail mail (the mail you get in your mailbox from the mailman). For the most part the damage is done - delete them!

If you recently put up a web site and you put your email address on it, you have invited a lot of spam. There are programs that search the web for email addresses and add them to their spam lists. Take the email address off the site to prevent any further damage.

Without knowing what program you are using to check your email it is very difficult to tell you how to stop or get rid of the spam messages but, If you are using Yahoo mail you can go into the mail options and turn spamguard on.

if that is turned on and you are still recieving the spam, you can highlight the suspect message and hit the "spam" button on the top of the screen.

Depending on what program you use to check mail, you might be able to install something like SpamPal (http://www.spampal.com) to help direct spam to the trash bin.. :-)
