most schools across the u.s. (north and south) were segregated until 1954 until the mandate to desegregate was signed. there were very few that were segregated before that. in 1972 there began a massive busing across the nation to balance out this segregation and many fought it, black and white, north and south, east and west. to get specifics on the number of schools before 1954 would be difficult but if you look up the history of virginia you may be able to find it. ***one note the university of virginia started to desegregate in 1950 but of course there were opponents and court battles but eventually they did. most ppl assume that racism and segregation was only in the south but it wasn't, it was the entire nation and some of the states who fought desegregation the hardest were in the north and midwest.
