God has never been a living thing. I don't know who even told he was. God isn't a living thing by the scienitific definition. Every one is right, he doesn't need to breath, he doesn't even have a physical body. God could be mistaken as a being by paintings and certain religions. In reality, he is not. There is no way to scientificaly explain God. You can only do it by belief and religious studies. To try to put itinto more of a "Scientifical" view, I'll say that God is everything around you, living and nonliving.

All you will see as answers are individuals' personal opinions. Are you only seeking opinions, and if so to what ends? Are you going to leave this question to a vote, and if so what do you expect that to accomplish?
I suggest that if you are interested in science and the mechanisms behind the creation of the world we know today, that you leave the question of God to religious discussion and instead study biology and natural history. Get some National Geographics, they're easy reading and you can get a bunch of back issues cheap at thrift stores and yard sales.
Scientists may or may not believe in some kind of god. But the persuit of science is the HOW of things, the physical mechanisms that make things as they are. The nature of scripture and dogma does not answer these questions. Science is often subject to revision and new ideas. Something no scientist should be afraid of.

Here are two online videos that will help answer your question. The videos are title "Is There Really a God (Part 1 & 2)". They are located at:
http://answersingenesis.org/video/ondemand/answersWithKen.asp
Many of these videos approach the topic from both a scientific view and a Christian view. I think you'll find the scientific parts of the video interesting.

I don't think it's an invalid question. Obviously the asker is trying to reconcile scientific methods with the dogma of faith. They do seem at odds with each other, don't they? Don't worry, unless someone is happy to blindly follow whatever their pastor says, they will have to deal with this dilemma as well.
Sorry man, like everyone else has said, there's really very little answer. We can prove through historical records that Jesus was born, lived in the middle east, and was crucified by Romans.
Get comfy with the idea of accepting "I don't know" as an answer when you try to explain religiously significant events with the limited knowledge that we have at hand.

I am sorry you only want a scientific view. I had my answer ready. But since I am here, He is...... and He's not a thing. All you will get here will be opinions because no one really knows. That's a fact. Science can't prove Science is Science. They say it and we believe it. Come into the light. Get real.

First you can't make something out of nothing without an eternal being already being there. You can't exist and non exist at the same time. You can't cause your own existence. If another created God then God himelf cannot be God.
On that thought..God has always existed. He was and is and will always be. He has no beginning and no end.

The spiritual energy that we are born into as sentient beings is one and the same energy that we could term as God energy or Christ consciousness. Like Christ we joyfully chose to manifest from it into our human form at birth. In our case forgetting that it is within us always choosing to mask it with our ego selves during our existence here on Earth. Christ was very conscious of it while on Earth. Like Christ we all joyfully return to it in death. It is very comforting to know that it is with all sentient beings eternally, regardless of their choice of religion.
