I beat them with a pole.
Or I just ignore them. Whichever answer brightens your day.

“Gossip is what no one claims to like, but everybody enjoys.”
- Joseph Conrad
I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of gossip at one point or another, perhaps without even knowing it.
I mean, isn’t Journalism “organized” gossip... (someone else said that, can’t remember who). That’s all over our media today, you can’t run from it.
Unfortunately, however, I am one of those who knows that they are guilty of doing it (hey, at least I can admit it) ... but I am not a monger, nor do I advocate it. I don’t do it to intentionally hurt anyone, I state what I believe to be facts... I mean I like to think that I’m not “gossiping” and the things I say about others TO others isn’t hurting anyone, but I’d have to be pretty naive to believe that.
This is a “trait” of mine that I am working on this year.
“Gossip needn't be false to be evil - there's a lot of truth that shouldn't be passed around.”
- Frank A. Clark
I mean, a person can have a conversation with someone else without gossiping. Gossip is merely an exercise of the tongue, whereas a conversation is an exercise of the mind. I just have to surround myself with good conversationalists... right? A Turkish Proverb states, “...who gossips to you, will gossip of you”
I think I went another direction with this question... but I hope that made sense.

I've been dealing with them since elementary, but what I do now is just smile at them like an idiot and not care. That really does work, because I am the one who has friends to support me when someone gossips about me for no apparent reason, and they're the ones who will most likely get jumped by the whole school.
What I like to do is during lunch, when they get up to do something, I place an open ketchup packet where their spot is. Trust me, LOADS of fun.

I usually ask if the information they are about to share was really meant for my ears.
Stops 'em cold everytime.
Sadly, I am probably part of the unholy breed more often than I realize. : (

to deal with unholy breed, you should drive a stake through their heart. for less drastic measures, don't participate in the gossip.

I just don't tell them anything I don't want everyone else to know. I've been known to stop someone in mid story and ask "And I need to know this because...?" A person's business is their own, and I can't stand people who gossip.

I deal with them by completely ignoring them and not talking to them thus not giving them any reason to gossip about me.

I like to tell them lots of lies and make them promise not to tell a soul Too funny when they get caught passing along the lie and they can't complain to me because they promised not to tell!

Deny them the privilege of any of your information, and avoid them if possible! Good luck.
