Yeah, but in Europe, the team's other players are making more than they are here in the U.S. He's making more than ALL of the other players on his team, COMBINED.
Imagine if someone got hired to sit next to you, and do the same job you're doing...But was earning as much as you and 10 of your coworkers! My guess is that you'd all have nothing else to talk about at the water cooloer!
On top of that, it's kinda big news to have a player with such notoriety playing here in the U.S. I think there are a lot of people hoping that this will boost the popularity of soccer here.

everyone is wondering because $250 million is a great deal of money for a soccer player specially when the sport is not that popular in the States. If that type of money was paid in Europe it would like eh who cares, but this is the equivilant of Alex Rodriguez getting $250 million, and that is a big deal even today, people bring that up, and that contract was 5-7 years ago. Thats why.

You know why, because soccer is not popular at all in the States and so when they have a big name coming here to play, they make a big deal out of it. Granted, Beckham is not the best in the world, at least not anymore, but just the fact that a big superstar is coming to USA to play soccer is gounds for a big hullabaloo.

He`s riding the name, image and pretty boy looks all the way to bank! I`m sure the LA Galaxy have purchased him to get more people through the gates! Yes he can still play but there are a lot less expensive, less pretty players who could have done the job!

They make a big deal cuz it's America!!! Everything is bigger and BETTER in the UNITED STATES!!!! That's why, cuz it's America--the most POWERFUL country in the world. Alot of people have their eyes on U.S. rather than a buncha other coutries in the world. That's why it's such a great deal!

Because he was offered a quarter of a BILLION dollars to play SOCCER in the US! You don't find that odd? I didn't even realize that league had that much gross income, let alone one team.
