Gibson makes some good guitars. You forgot to throw the Flying V into the argument.

Les Pauls, I mean Standards ,Deluxes and Customs are all better built guitars then a Stratocaster. But as to which I prefer to play depends on the music. I usually prefer a Strat because it is lighter and has more of a radius on the fret board. Personaly I play Jazz guitars like an L5, or Byrdland or a Johnny Smith.
I also play classical guitars by Oribe. I have a Heritage Golden Eagle but it is custom made and is a Johnny Smith style instrument.

it's all a matter of taste and the what suits your style of playing. I prefer the Strat because I like the concave neck, and it's not as heavy to hold all night as a Les Paul. the LP has a wide flat neck and a sharper tone, but the Strat has a tremolo arm [on some models] which I don't think come as standard on LP's. the fret board ends at the body on the LP, which I like as you can play to the top notes without having to stretch your hand all the way out, as on the Strat, again this is very tiring when your playing long sets, tends to give me cramp in the muscle between thumb and
forefinger. even so I still prefer the Strat, but that's my choice, if your thinking of buying, try out both before deciding.

The les pauls have a much better SOUND, but the matince on them is terrible. Not to mention the stratocaster has a more attractive design (to me, at least)
So I guess it depends on what I'm comparing the two on.

Les Paul does.

I prefer Strat (S'pecially 50's) They have more personality, example: when you play soft or hard or muff sound or thin pick or full out, the strat gives you all the soul you want to add, the gibson is like a compressor, one sound & no touch sensitivity.
don't get me wrong I like Gibson also, but Strat does everything.
I use my Custom Gibson only for Metal & such Styles(sometimes) Listen to SRV & you'll know what the Strat is capable of.

Had both models. Now I only have my Fender Strat. It's a Hank Marvin signature, limited edition and works well in both clean and overdrive. I use a Marshall Valvestate VS65R amplifier and a DOD FX processor. For me it Rocks.

i do! Les Pauls drive me crazy.. i'm only $177 away from an Epi Les Paul Standard! i'm getting it in cherry suburst and calling it layla =)

strats are too common, and they are rather punk-ish, so i like les pauls a lot better

Yes. I never was that crazy about strats. I find Les Pauls nicer to play. Nice when clean and chunky 'n' meaty when overdriven.
