I just moved to Detroit, but am going to be spending the next month in grand rapids with a friend. I want to get my drivers license changed over to Michigan now that I’ve moved here but I have a kind of stupid question. Do I have to get my drivers license in the city I live in or is it ok if I have drivers license switched over in Grand Rapids? I would think that being in the same state would be ok but I didn’t know if you could only go to the license bureau in your state or not.
Thanks and sorry for the stupid question!!!!!

Not 100% sure but I believe you can get your drivers' license anywhere as long as you give them your correct home address. You may want to check the FAQ page for the Secretary of State (we don't have a DMV here) http://www.michigan.gov/sos

Just bring proof of residency to the Sec. of State office, they shouldnt have an issue doing it, but the thing is that they will mail it to your home address...that will be your issue...oh and the Secretary of State...have fun there!!! I live in GR, nice city, just stay out of the hood!!!

you can get your drivers license anywhere in MI. You don't register with a city, you register with a state, so as long as you're in MI you're fine.

Good question. I'm not sure but welcome to Michigan! How's it feel to be a "Michigander?"
