second side = x
x-5+x+(x-5)+3 =17
3x=17+7;
x= 24/3=8
first side = 8-5 =3;
third side =8-5+3=6

a + b + c = 17
a = b - 5
c = a + 3
c = b - 5 + 3 = b - 2 { Substitute for a }

(b - 5) + b + (b - 2) = 17 { Subsitute for a and c and solve }
3b - 7 = 17
3b = 24
b = 8
a = 3
c = 6 <== This is the third side. QED

The 3rd side is 6 in

if you assume the 2nd side is x,
then the 1st side is x-5
the 3rd side is x-5+3

since the perimeter is 17,
(x-5)+x+(x-5+3)=17
when you solve, x=8

therefore, 3rd side is (8-5+3) = 6 in
