Diapers! But don't get the Newborn ones, I always had more of them then I needed. Get a big box of size 2. Or a big box of wipes refills (sensitive or unscented). If you get clothes, get a couple of packages of onesies or sleepers (size 3-6 months) or a couple packages of plain white socks (size is 0-6months). The little buggers seem to lose socks even before they move. Another excellent gift is something for mom, a gift card for pizza or meals that can be delivered, a gift card for pictures at Walmart or Sears or something. The best gift I ever received was a beautiful handmade coupon from my sister that was a promise for a day of shopping with the baby after he came so we could get what we didn't have. In the end, we had to get a baby bathtub and it only cost her a little bit of money but the promise of something to do with the baby after he came was really nice and I really needed to get out of the house then too. I think all told, the whole ordeal cost her less than $30 and it sticks out in my mind as one of the most precious things I ever received.

My most special, useful, favorite baby gift for my little guy? He got a diaper cake! It was the neatest thing, full of diapers & baby things! Try looking on Ebay for one... you should be able to get one for that.
Or if you're looking for something for when he's bigger.... the Playskool Discovery dome is a GREAT toy that is for ages 3-36 mos! My 4 month old boy loves it!
The Fisher-Price has musical stacking stars (about $12) or the Fisher-Price baby CD player or aquarium bowl.... My son loves these toys!
they outgrow the little things so very fast, figure out what the season will be 3/4 mos after the boy is born, buy /69 month clothes for that season.
Good luck!

Since you're a guy, I'm betting it's not as fun for you to “ooh” and “ah” while buying little baby clothes or fuss over a gift basket. Besides, most mothers-to-be receive 10 times more clothing, blankets & stuffed animals than they need. I also got no less than 5 baskets filled with little baby care stuff.
So buy a bouncy chair or a play mat. Include a gift receipt in case they get two.

One cute thing to do is get a basket and a clothesline and use clothespins to attach outfits to the line. Then put this in the basket. Depending on how many outfits you get it could be more than $40, but this is the gift that gets the most attention at all the baby showers that I've been to.

Get a washing hamper and fill it with baby products like talc, soap, diaper rash lotion, shampoo, maybe some was clothes and vests and a little blue teddy, wrap in clear cellophane paper and tie with a blue ribbon.
This is a great gift and also save the new mom some money and saves he having to run out to the store to get some

Get a gift card to a Babies R Us or Baby Depot. New parents get loads of stuff they don't need at showers like wipe warmers...but they always run out of necessary things like diapers...

You can make up a cheep basket full of bathing items like hooded towel wash clothes baby wash, lotion, baby shampoo, baby q-tips, rubber ducky, baby power. you can also give a couple of outfits but buy the next size up because they grow so fast. also little toys like a a teething book or music items. sometimes something with music and lights. baby's like that and also it's nice to give diapers and wipes it helps out alot.

Diapers are always a GREAT idea. More and more people are throwing "diaper" parties due to the cost of them. Some people don't realize how many diapers a parent will go through with a child.
