What a question! To the best of my knowledge, the Illuminati (i.e, the Illuminated Ones) is a long existing satanically-based organization whose purpose is to gradually bring about the one world government/religion and prepare it for taking over by the prophesied anti-Christian figure. They recruit famous, rich and powerful people from all over the world through various lodges and groups, such as the Freemasons, the Bonesmen of Yale, and the like. Their members are plugged into various world influencing organizations such as the Tri-lateral Commission, the United nations, the Bilderberger group, The Council of Foreign Nations, etc. Their members include presidents, princes, kings, lawyers, billionaires, bankers, royalty, religious leaders, etc. They seek financial control of the world through uniting the banks and other methods, and have been around a very, very long time.
You can research them to a limited degree on the Internet, but be careful. They do not like to be inquired about too closely and are good at what they do. Do not be put off by those who dismiss this simply as conspiracy theory stuff; it is legitimate, despite the misinformation and confusion surrounding it. It is difficult to research, but there are many who have some knowledge. Good luck.

The Illuminati is the name of groups, modern and historical, real and fictitious, verified and alleged. Most commonly The Illuminati refers specifically to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment secret society. However, it often refers to a shadowy conspiratorial organization which is reputed to secretly control world affairs, usually a modern incarnation or continuation of the Bavarian Illuminati. In this conspiratorial context, Illuminati is often used in reference to a New World Order (NWO). The Illuminati, or illuminated ones, are believed to be the masterminds behind the events which will lead to a New World Order in which the world will be run by a single, fascist government, and a large portion of the human race will be eliminated.
