I always here how people say it makes you a better person, etc I understand that. My little brother has fetal alcohol syndrome (my parents adopted him), and I love him and all but if I had a kid, say with Down's or some serious problem that would require constant care from me for the rest of me or my child's life, I just don't think I could do it.

No, you would be a sensible person. Let someone who is more capable and willing take care of the baby.

i really don't know what to say to this. i am an adoptive parent and if the baby i was going to adopt was born with problems then it wouldn't matter because you take that same chance with a genetic child. but if you know you couldn't do this then i would say don't ever have children. any child will have challenges and if you aren't up for that then you shouldn't be a parent. not coming down on you, it's good that you know that, just do not ever put yourself in that position because this is an innocent life at stake here.

I don't think it makes you sound like a bad person. You're honest in saying you don't think you could do it. My guess is, although no doubt you would love the baby, you couldn't handle the emotional part of constantly caring for him or her. If that's true, and you did try to raise the baby, you might feel that you're not being a good parent. Looking at it this way, I can understand why you would give it up.

If you didn't feel you could do it then you are already defeated before you even try so giving the child up would be the right thing to do and would not make you a bad person. Whom ever adopted that child would be a super wonderful person.

I don't think any one is a bad person for giving a child up for adoption if they are retarded or perfectly fine if you know you cant handle a child its way better for the child to have someone who wants them and who can take care of them

I'm not going to make a judgement, I just want to say that chilldren with Down syndrome are rarely "severely" retarded (usually mild to moderate) and while they do require more care in terms of working with them to help them develop, many go on to lead very "normal" productive lives. They graduate school, some go to college, some drive, some marry, etc.

Just wanted to set the record straight.

Shame on you. But if you look at it like that, then maybe it would be better for your kid to be adopted by a caring family... but for the kid's sake of course.

i agree with you 100% and i think you are very brave for sharing your feelings. i think keeping a seriously ill child is hard for the family and on the child. i would not be able to do it either. and please dont let anyone tell you that you are a bad person for thinking this way.
