Religion would still be a part of everyday life because weak minded or dim witted people will always need a crutch. The truth is, like with the dinosaurs killing the 6,000 year old earth myth, the proof of the evolutionary process debunking the "god made man in his own image..etc,etc", the discovery of alien life will only cause religious fanatics to invent more doctrine to suit them and their religion and explain away extra terrestrial life. All in all religion is good for networking with others like you and preventing the onset of total anarchy, but thats it.

Ultimately, not a lot. Religion (whether you "believe" or not) is ultimately our belief system expressed in a symbolic form. And having a belief system is basic to human cognition and psychology. So "religion" would still be with us--and probably always will be.

But that doesn't mean the forms won't change--at least for some people. Personally, I'd expect a lot of theological arguements as people tried to fit the new information into their religious framework. And at least one new religion--probably dozens--to pop up.

On the other hand, suppose we're talking about intelligent aliens visiting us. Maybe they'd be bring missionaries to convert US! :)

I think that it would almost confirm religion. People are so closeminded about the existance of anything else that suddenly discovering extraterrestrials would be an extreme shock. I think this discovery though would be so contrary to the norm that it would open other peoples minds. If aliens could exist, then god could too. Also, if the aliens were warlike and this caused an apocolypse like scenario then more than ever, people would need something greater to save them.

Nothing. Religious types will try and convert them - I can imagine it and it would make me so ashamed to be human.

I'd like to say that since the bible doesn't talk about aliens then the fact that there are some would be another nail in religion's coffin but the hard core fundamentalists are immune to any evidence or rational arguments.

i think it will depend on the type/form of life found outside... if it is a good type and intelligent, then maybe we will call them angels or people of God or if they are monstrous, then we will say that satan went and settled somewhere else... but for sure, all the religions here would try and fit them into their own scheme of things and ideas and yes, i am sure all the religions would try and convert them or claim that they are from their belief system... it will be an interesting fight.....
but on a serious note - i dont think it will prove that GOD does not exists. it will just prove that HE created others as well like he created us... its just HE will be different - maybe the aliens will be religious too... they might come with their own religion and their own bible - who knows????

The existence of alien life on other planets would completely undermine Christianity.

Jesus died to save mankind. The Bible says he died once.
He came as a man to save man. His death as a man cannot atone for the sins of alien lifeforms.

Also Adam and Eve's sin caused God to curse the whole of creation - not just earth. It would seem unfair to the aliens to be impacted by Adam's sin. We on the other hand are descended from Adam and Eve and are therfore sinful by inheritance.

Of course there is extraterrestial life of a sort - angelic and demonic. Some 'alien' encounters are certainly demonic encounters - not ET.

As a Christian, I say with all the billions of galaxies in the universe and all the billions of stars in those galaxies, it would be awfully arrogant of us to think that ours is the only planet on which God created life. Why wouldn't he? Maybe try something different... how about a life-form based on something other than carbon?

Or, if you're thinking of microscopic organisms on Mars or Titan, while the possibility of it excites me and intrigues me, I frankly doubt that it will ever be found.
