It depends on the build of the horse...on a narrow bodied TB you could be comfortable on a 17h horse...on a stocky, round barreled QH you may be able to get by on a 14.3 h horse.

I'm 5'10" with a 34" inseam and am comfortable on horses from 15.2 (really wide barrelled) and up. I am not comfortable on narrow horses of any height.

I am 5'5'' and just bought a horse that will be 16.3 hands. Minimum I wouldn't go below 14.3. Of course this depends on the weight of the saddle you will use and how much you weight. But I ride my 14.3 hand Arabian which is a little older sparingly and try to find lighter saddles when I do ride her. A general rule is that no horse should carry more than 20% of their body weight. Take into consideration wether you are going to barrel race and need a shorter stockier quick turning Quarter Horse or if you are jumping and need a long legged Thoroughbred.

A 14 to 15hh might want to be about the right length . A cob would not count number number even if it changed into 14hh or 15 hh as they are stocky and may carry better than 11 stone. you want a horse that you'll take care of and get on with , it is the biggest element. My acquaintances horse is 14hh and carried her high-quality and jumped jumps and galloped such as her without issues, she weighs 11 stone and is about 5ft 6". the horse is retired now . once you're attempting the horse out you'll understand if it would want to carry you, it is going to sense precise. solid success.

Please do not listen to the first answer. According to them they ride a horse that is 2 feet tall. A hand = 4 inches. My thoroughbred is 17 hh and Im 5'10'', however, I also have a 14.3hh Morgan. But you should first ask your self what you want to do with the horse. A shorter horse is better "equipped" for roping and a taller horse is better for jumping. So there is no solid answer to your question.

The typical horse height is generally around 15 hands. Do you feel comfortable on an average sized horse? If no, go smaller. If you feel comfortable on all sizes, take your choice.

I would say anywhere from 15.3 hands to 17.0 hands. You are a lot taller than me and I usually ride a horse that is about 15.3 hands and he is perfect for me. (I am only 5' 2") Good luck with everything!

I am 5'7 and always loved riding 6.0 hands and taller thoughbreds. I would say around 5.10 hands might be a good range, below that your legs might hang lower than the belly...unless thats what you want. I always tended to like the taller horses especially if you plan to show, it would look like you fit much better about 5.10 and up

Good luck and enjoy! I had to quit riding due to an injury but miss it like crazy
